There could be some window focus issue involved

As some have noted, there are still some peculiarities as regards whether dialog windows are visible or whether they end up being hidden behind the client window. I am not one of the developers working on this, but I suspect any autocomplete issues have a related cause; i.e. the autocomplete window really is opening, but it's not visible (and of course, unlike a modal dialog, it closes when you use Alt+Tab, so you can't switch to it). I don't know why it should make a difference whether you type a space after your =, though.
